Craft & Culture

Growing up both Australian and Japanese, we learned to value the craftsmanship that both cultures hold so dearly. There’s a quiet pride in seeing something marked with “Made in Japan” or “Made with 100% Australian Ingredients”. It speaks to quality, care, and intention.

We wanted RCK to reflect those same values. Not just because we believe in them, but because we know others do too. We want people to feel proud knowing their RCK Candle was handmade here in Australia by us, not mass-produced in a factory overseas with poor working standards, cutting corners to squeeze out more profit.

At RCK, each piece is a reflection of intentional craftsmanship, cultural connection, and environmental care. From our hand-cut sandstone holders to our curated scents and refillable designs, every detail is considered.

Meet the Makers

RCK Candles was founded by sisters Yuli and Aya, who wanted to create something that embodied their dual heritage, their love for both Australia and Japan, and the values that come with each. They lead the brand across all areas, from product curation and brand aesthetic to content creation and, of course, hand-making every single candle.

Ronan, Yuli’s partner, helps out with the technical side of things (he’s a software engineer) and is also the one responsible for cutting each sandstone holder by hand.

Right now, it’s just the three of us. We do everything in house. We make the candles, cut the stones, create our content, attend every market, build this website, and fulfill each and every one of your orders ourselves.

When you support RCK, you’re supporting the time, care, and hard work that goes into not just each candle, but everything behind the scenes it takes to run a small business. Thank you for your support, and if you’re reading this, thank you for caring.

How We Make Our Candles

Every RCK Candle begins in Bundanoon, where we choose a large block of sandstone from the Bundanoon Sandstone Quarry, stone that has taken millions of years to form. From this block, a thick slab is cut and shaped by Ronan from our team. Using a diamond-tipped saw blade, he cuts the slab into cubes and then hand-drills each one of one piece individually. Once shaped, the stones are thoroughly hand-washed and left to dry completely before making their way to the RCK Candle Factory.

At our little RCK Candle Factory in Bundanoon, Yuli and Aya begin by melting down high-quality, 100% natural soy wax, which is vegan, non-toxic, sustainable, and eco-friendly. While the wax melts, they prepare each wick and can by hand, ensuring the wick is the correct width and perfectly centred.

Fragrance oils, inspired by memories of Japan, are carefully blended into the hot wax. Each candle is then hand-poured in small batches of no more than 15 at a time, allowing close attention to detail. After a few hours, the candles are set, the wicks trimmed, and the surfaces smoothed with a heat gun to ensure a clean, even finish.

The candles are then left to cure for over two weeks, allowing the wax and fragrance to fully bond, ensuring a longer-lasting burn and a rich scent throw. Each candle is checked once more and refined if needed before it finds its other half, an RCK Sandstone Holder.

What Goes Into Each RCK Candle

When choosing our materials, we strive to support Australian suppliers, use safe and sustainable ingredients, and choose packaging that is either reusable or recyclable. We value handmade products in both Australia and Japan because it's where craftsmanship means something. Things are made with intention, held to high standards, and built to last. This ultimately fosters trust. That same attention to detail and transparency is something we’re proud to carry through every RCK product.

All of our sandstone is sourced from Bundanoon Sandstone Quarry. We cut, shape, and finish each holder ourselves. Each one of one sandstone piece is designed to last a lifetime. Our refill system means you can keep using your one of one sandstone holder again and again.

For our candles, we use 100% natural soy wax and high-quality fragrance oils. Nothing else. No additives, no harsh chemicals. Just clean-burning candles with a beautiful scent throw. They’re non-toxic, vegan, and made from sustainably sourced ingredients. Each candle is hand-poured by us. Unlike typical mass-produced candles that are… well, who knows what’s in those.

Our candle tins are fully recyclable, and we use wooden wicks, which are generally considered more sustainable than traditional cotton wicks. We use a single ply of natural wood that gives each candle a unique and earthy look that pairs beautifully with the sandstone. Being wood, they may occasionally give off a soft crackle, adding a subtle, calming atmosphere to your space.

There’s a lot that goes into every RCK Candle. From choosing each physical component to hand-making each one with care, we believe that piece by piece we’re building something better. Products made with intention, ingredients you can trust, and choices you can feel good about.

The Meaning Behind the Names

Each of our candles has a Japanese name, each one linked to a memory, mood, or moment of ours in Japan. These names are more than just aesthetic. They are personal, and every scent is crafted to capture the feeling behind it.

With Japanese-inspired scents held in Australian sandstone, each RCK Candle embodies our dual identity as half Australian and half Japanese.

Our Sandstone Colours

Each of our RCK Sandstone Holders is crafted from natural sandstone, offering a unique, one of one piece. The colours and patterns of the stones can vary widely, making every holder distinct. The photos provided are simply examples from each of the three sandstone colour categories. Choose from our White, Banded, or Bundy Brown sandstone options, and let nature's beauty decide the rest! To learn more about each colour see our Sandstone Colours page.
