Candle Care

General Candle Care

To optimise the use of your RCK Candles and ensure a great burning experience, here are some general candle care tips:

Tunnelling

To avoid tunnelling, allow the wax to fully melt and reach the edges of the can during each burn. We recommend burning your candle for 1 to 3 hour intervals at a time to achieve a full melt pool, where the melted wax touches the edges.

If your candle does begin to tunnel, there is no need to worry. It is designed to self-correct. We use a larger wick that helps resolve tunnelling over time. Simply burn the candle for longer intervals, and as it reaches about halfway down, the increased heat will gradually melt the wax outward and even out the surface again.

Wooden Wick Care

Before each lighting, trim the wick to a length of 3 to 6 millimetres. This helps maintain a steady flame and prevents the wick from extinguishing itself. Avoid trimming it too short or too long, as this may affect the candle's burn quality.

After each burn, once the candle has cooled completely, gently remove the fragile, charred wood from the wick. It should break off easily with your fingers. Clear out any loose pieces from the can before relighting to keep the wax clean and your burn smooth.

This simple care routine will help maintain an even, clean burn. Always make sure the surface of the wax is free from dust or debris before lighting.

Lighting the Wick

To light your wooden wick candle, tilt the candle slightly and hold the flame to the base of the wick, close to the wax surface. The flame needs to draw across the wood to catch properly, which may take a few seconds and sometimes a couple of tries.

This is completely normal for wooden wicks. Just be patient and give it another go if it goes out. Make sure the wick is trimmed to around 3 to 6 millimetres before lighting, as an untrimmed wick may struggle to stay lit.

By following these candle care practices, you'll enhance the performance and longevity of your RCK Candle, ensuring an enjoyable burning experience.

How to Refill Your RCK Candle

  1. Ensure the candle can is completely cooled before handling to prevent any risk of burns.
  2. Carefully lift out the can.
  3. Check the wick of your new RCK Refill and ensure it follows the Wooden Wick Care above.
  4. Ensure there is nothing inside the sandstone holder.
  5. Gently drop your new RCK Refill candle into the sandstone holder. The top of the can should meet the top of the sandstone holder.
  6. When you are ready, light your new RCK Candle and enjoy!

Note: Remember to always exercise caution when handling candles, and never handle them while they are lit or hot.

Candle Safety

To ensure the safe use of your RCK Candles, please carefully follow these instructions and warnings:

  1. Never attempt to move a burning or hot candle. Always wait for the candle to extinguish, the wax to fully solidify, and the sandstone holder to cool before handling. Hot wax can cause burns and may stain the sandstone holder.
  2. The sandstone holder may become hot during use. Place your RCK Candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface to prevent any risk of fire or heat damage.
  3. Keep your RCK Candle out of reach of pets, children, and away from flammable materials. Ensure there is a safe distance between the candle and any nearby objects.
  4. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Always extinguish the flame before leaving the room or going to sleep.
  5. After burning, a small amount of wax may remain. Allow the candle to fully cool before attempting to remove any leftover wax.
  6. Handle the sandstone holder with care. It is solid and heavy. Avoid bumping or dropping it on hard surfaces, especially on its edges, as this can cause chipping or damage.
  7. Store your RCK Candles and Refills upright, in a cool, dry place. Keep them away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Storing your candles below 25 degrees Celsius helps preserve their quality and prevents softening or melting. We recommend placing the lid back on the candle once it has cooled.
  8. Always burn your candle inside one of our RCK sandstone holders. The sandstone protects you from the hot can, helps prevent the candle from being knocked over, and makes burning far safer overall. (They make fireplaces out of sandstone for a reason!) We do not recommend burning our RCK Refills on their own.
